The lifespan of a leopard gecko is astonishing. They can live up to twenty years or more. When it comes to its length, it reaches about 8-10 inches. Leopard geckos are usually white and yellow with black spots. Baby lizards may appear more striped when they are born but they eventually become spotted through time. However, there are other colors and patterns available depending on its subtype.

Geckos are nocturnal lizards. They are easily tamed. Surprisingly, this type of lizard cannot climb unlike other lizards. The reason behind this is the absence of toe pads. They also do not have eyelids.

Anyone would love to have a leopard gecko as a pet. However, there are some essential things that one should know before adopting a gecko. First of all, the most important thing, what do leopard gecko pets eat? It is relatively simple. Live insects are one of the best foods for leopard geckos. Unfortunately, these lovely creatures are not vegetarian. They do not eat plants, fruits or vegetables. Crickets and different species of worms will do such as mealworms, waxworms or superworms. These items are healthy for geckos. But remember not to feed them pinky mice.

However, before making your geckos enjoy a sumptuous meal of insects, gut loading should be performed with all the insects first. These insects must be given a nutritious powdered diet 12 hours prior to feeding the gecko. This is essential with the health of the leopard gecko.

Another way of providing nutrients to the insects is through dusting. Vitamins and minerals can be delivered to the insects and to the leopard geckos through this process. Simply combine the insects and dusting powder on a container and gently shake it. But be careful when transferring the dusted insects to the leopard gecko's container. Make sure that no powder will enter the gecko's eyes.

An alternative to providing nutrients for the geckos is placing a small jar or container filled with powdered vitamins and minerals inside the gecko's home. The gecko will simply lick some powder from time to time.

The amount and size of a gecko's food depends on every inch of the leopard gecko's length. There is no need to provide food daily. They can be fed every other day. For example, a gecko that is four inches long can be fed with eight mealworms for three to four times a week.

In terms of their water intake, the owner should always provide a shallow dish of water. Make sure that the container is stable so that it will not be spilled. Vitamin drops should not be mixed with the fresh water. And more importantly, the container should be cleaned regularly.
